She Thinks Pink!

Hi everyone! It's Kimberly here from Prairie Sisters and I'd like to share with you all a very special project I've had in mind for quite some time now. I had trouble finding a piece worthy enough to let my creation take place. We've had this little white night stand sitting in the back of our storage unit forever. With all the auctions we attend and thrift stores it kinda got lost and over looked. I found it and new that it would be perfect for this project. Here's to the strong women of yesterday, today and all of their tomorrows!

The before....This was a forgotten little night stand sitting in the back of a dark storage shed.

I sanded it down and sprayed a primer on it. I then painted it a white called Snowy Mount from Olympic Paints in a Satin. The drawer I painted Oxford Pink from the Eddie Bauer line in Valspar Satin.

After...I wanted to be creative in a positive way and support a cause, so I decided to go with a pink ribbon stencil effect rather than chevron or stripes. Here's to the strong and the fighters!
The Process..After the first coats of the white and pink I then ruffed up the entire night stand with sand paper. Hand painted the breast cancer ribbon on the top and bottom of the night stand in Oxford pink first. After that had dried I went around the edges with Barely Pink from the PANTONE collection in Valspar/Satin. I then sanded over them for that aged feel. I also painted a ribbon inside the drawer. When that was done I then went over the entire night stand with a Minwax water based coffee tint stain, coated it with Cabot's Semi-Gloss Polyurethane and added a beautiful knob.

Hand painted pink ribbons for a stencil effect.

I'm really happy with the results. It came out just as I had imagined and supports women fighting everywhere.

She's Gone Shipwrecked!

It's hump day and we are busy little bee's here at Prairie Sisters Chic Boutique. Summer is bringing in the tourists and we have been selling stuff like crazy and working on tons of new pieces. Today Kristy finished a bookcase we scored at an auction. The lines on this piece are so clean and modern. Kristy took it from blah brown to a beautiful shipwrecked inspired bookshelf. Check it out. She's a beauty!

Sneak Peak...

Before...A blah brown.
After...She's gone Shipwrecked...
Colors Used...A Danish Blue base coat with a metallic bronze dry brushed over it for that vintage ship feel.

Do you love this piece? We do! It came out so beautiful and now we are day dreaming about sunshine and margaritas on an island somewhere. ; )

Hope we inspired you to try a little DIY of your own. Flea Market Favorites...

Hey Guys! Well, we recently went over to our booth to assess things and get organized and every time we go we take a walk through. Flea Markets are so much fun! Yes, there can be lots of junk found but there can also be great treasures found. We found a few on our recent trip that we would like to share with you all. We decided to start a regular post on our favorite finds at flea markets, goodwills, thrift stores, antique shops, and consignment stores out here in the wild west whenever we are out and on the hunt.

We hope you are all having a wonderful day and maybe  upcycling some goodies or crafting up a storm. Take a minute and come check out some cool  flea market favorites this week....

Check out this beautiful wall hanging. We are not sure who it was done by but it's located at Bart's Flea Market in Laramie,Wyoming in booth #4.

                                                                The Cowboy Girls
We just fell in love! It's like a scrapbook but turned into a beautiful, vintage, western  wall hanging. It tells a story in such a unique way! We thought what a great concept. How awesome would it be to make something like this full of childhood memoires for your children to keep? Instead of a scrapbook a beautiful wall hanging?
Vintage cowgirl photos, brooches, paper, stitching, buttons, fabric, burnt pieces of cardboard maybe? So much thought and creativity went into this. It has cute little quotes said by strong women of the cowboy days throughout.

"I ain't afraid to wear a dress, I ain't afraid to wear britches. I ain't afraid of nothin." Martha
"Sometimes I hold a gun and sometimes I hold a man. Either way it's dangerous" quote
AhhhhhhhMAZING! "When I need money I rob a train. Heck...the boys do it all the time." Pearl. The quote on the wall hanging.
"I thought about being a lady and then they told me I couldn't curse" quote from wall hanging.
We just loved everything about this. It's seems to tell a story about the strong women in the days of cowboys and Indians and yet done in such a feminine way. We are a fan!

Here's another cute little idea from the same booth. My 9 year old daughter loves making these fabric yoyos. In fact she whips them up like there's no tomorrow. We haven't figured out what to do with them, but we saw this and thought what a cute idea. Another great find at booth #4 at Barts Flea Market in Laramie, Wyoming.
A cute little turtle of yoyos. Would love to have a ladybug or bumblebee one.

Lastly...We have eyeballed this beauty since spring. It's an old garden tools machine of some sort. It was in the back and we are unsure of who to give credit to for this quirky find but we appreciate it and all it's glory. We thought it would be so cute in the front yard of a beautiful landscaped house that had some room to spare. The design of it, the color, the lines are all so neat. It instantly takes you back in time. Another one We LOVE!

Well I hope you enjoyed these awesome flea market finds which are all  located at Barts Flea Market in Laramie, Wyoming. Check them out if you can.

A Vintage Seed Packet inspired Mirror.

Hey Guys! Check out this ugly mirror we found at the Goodwill for 5 bucks. We found inspiration from vintage seed packets and turned it from a horrid brown to  Vintage Chic. It would be adorable to hang in your garden area to hold seed packets, a little girls room for cute decoration, or even your kitchen or living room to hold your keys and sunglasses next to your door! The possibilities are endless with this adorable upcycle. Check it out below..

Sneak Peek...

The Inspiration...

The Process...
we just primed it, slapped on some white paint, painted the flowers with left over candy apple red paint we had laying around, painted the stems and leaves with a green craft paint, added some touches of details, stained over parts of it to antique it and roughed it up for that Vintage chic look. We're in love with!

Now...Vintage Chic

Hope you enjoyed this little fun and easy DIY inspired by old vintage seed packets and maybe given you a little inspiration to try a DIY of your own.

A Farm House Chic inspired Buffet makeover

Hi everyone! It's Kimberly from Prairie Sisters and I'm here to share with you my latest re purposed piece. We got this buffet from an auction for 25 bucks. That's a score! It looks as if it's from the 50's or 60's maybe. Anyway, It's been on the "to do list" and I finally got around to finishing it up. I contemplated on what I was going to do with it for a few months. I wanted a little more of a country look for this piece and I'm thrilled with the results. Here's what I did...

Sneak Peak... The bottom two drawers do not have knobs because they are grooved on each side for the functionality of opening and closing. I did not want to take away from the original function and beauty of the piece that I myself have never seen before. I thought it was cool and if I were to add the knobs they would have been off centered from the top two and would not have looked right anyway. Just in case anyone is wondering. : )

The Process...
This buffet went through many stages and different knobs.

BEFORE....

Materials..
1.  3 coats of....Pittsburgh Paint, Ultra Interior in Satin. Dutch Boy in Designer White.
 Materials...
1. Stained the doors and drawers with Minwax water based stain in Island Water.
2. Sanded that down after it dried a bit.

After...The top one was after I had finished and didn't like it. I felt it needed more character and I wasn't digging the white knobs. So I got out some Minwax water based stain in Coffee tint that I had used on my coffee table you can see that process here http://prairiesistersboutique.blogspot.com/2013/04/hey-guys-its-me-kimberly-from-prairie.html
I decided to stain the top and a light coat over the blue toned stain. It seeped in to the already exposing wood and just made it look so much cuter and aged. However, I was still confused about the newer knobs I had picked out.

Finally...After 2 weeks, and in the middle of house hunting, packing, and bad weather I managed to finish it. I LOVE it. I had to style it outside because well... 1.I couldn't get it inside by myself and 2...our house is full of boxes.

The Details... I wanted it real rough looking. I sanded it down in places, and then went over certain exposed wood with a darker stain using a Minwax Stain Marker in Dark Walnut which whomever invented those markers are genius. They are like colored pencils for furniture.

I loved the 3rd set of knobs I chose. LOL. It took trial and error and many trips back to Hobby Lobby but I finally decided on these with the help of Kristy. I also decided to stain the back panel in the island blue for an added touch of detail as well as the insides of the drawers and sides.

This piece was a process but a good one. I love the results and look forward to doing more buffets.
Total Cost Break Down..
1. Buffet- $25
2. White Paint- $12
3. Island Blue stain- $13
4. Coffee Stain- Already had
5. Knobs-$12 for all 3.
Total Cost...$62.00
